oh by the way yesterday at the grrm talk he was asked about his influences and he talked about how he was obsessed as a kid with chivalry and the idea of knighthood and glory and then he read a lot of historical fiction and the truth of life in those times was gritty and horrible and full of death and rape and torture and how he’s fascinated by the juxtaposition of those two things, of the expectation of medieval chivalric idealism and the reality of medieval life

so anyone who thinks those tropes are being played straight in these books can suck it, basically

#for serious #and he does such a good job of it that i get really sad when people miss it because their reading experience was way less awesome #jaime has the perfect form—handsome rich strong great at hitting things with swords #but no moral compass (what is a moral compass anyways) #moreover his ladylove is indeed the chivalric ideal—the elevation of the queen as perfect romance #but she’s his sister#so #yeah #and sandor—who is much closer in terms of morality to the saintly knight (although not 100% good by any stretch) #is an ugly scarred commoner who refuses to call himself a knight at all #and allows himself to be used as a tool by morally bankrupt regimes #the closest we get in the books to the chivalric ideal in the books is probably loras #but the ”queen” he elevates as his courtly love is a man and therefore no more allowed than jaime’s incest #come on people #this is pretty damn obvious #and AMAZING
